Case Study: Envisioning Thriving Neighborhoods Through Collective Imagination

Client/Project Overview:

As part of the Cultural Organizing for Community Change convening hosted by Arts & Democracy and Naturally Occurring Cultural Districts NY (NOCD-NY), point A studio facilitated the "FutureCraft: Collective Imagination for Thriving Neighborhoods" workshop. This immersive two-hour session engaged a diverse group of organizers, artists, media makers, and policy makers in reimagining the future of their neighborhoods and identifying bold actions to realize those visions.

Participants work in pairs to share their visions for thriving neighborhoods in 2044.

Objectives:

The workshop aimed to help participants:

1. Understand futures thinking as a tool for collective visioning and action.

2. Unleash transformative possibilities for their neighborhoods 20 years in the future

3. Explore the complex interconnections shaping community futures through creative, embodied practices

4. Translate collective visions into concrete strategies and next steps

Participants build “tactile” structures that are needed for thriving neighborhoods of the future.

5. Embodied Vision Mosaic: In a captivating final activity, participants became Movers, Soundscapers, and Dream Builders, weaving together an immersive embodied story of the vibrant future they long to inhabit.

6. Reflection and Commitments: Participants shared one seed (a single word) that represents what they are planting now, to build their new shared future.
